Data shows there are approximately 2 million
homeless children living in the Russian Federation. This figure includes
orphans, runaways, and
children whose families have lost their homes. Of this number, thousands are
currently living in Moscow and surrounding regions either in an orphanage or
on the streets.
The conditions of Russian orphanages vary. However, 48% of all the orphanages need basic repairs. Ten percent of the orphanages do not have proper sanitary hygiene facilities (working showers, toilets, sinks, nor hot water). Some facilities have not been repaired in 15 years, some even 20. This means, that in a child’s life time, he/she will have never seen any improvements to their living conditions.
The fate of the children after leaving the orphanage is…..
40% become alcoholics & drug addicts
40% are involved in criminal activities
10% commit suicide
less than 10% will succeed
